Moderating this day-long program of individual and panel discussions with audience participation will be Carolyn Thornton; authors mingle with guests during lunch and will have autographed books available for purchase. Ava Hayman will teach a poetry workshop for Bains Elementary students on Friday, February 20, and she joins Abigail Padgett in presenting a writers’ workshop for more mature aspiring and professional authors the following week in a stimulating plantation setting. African and Caribbean Influence in Southern Antebellum  Cooking at Rosedown  SHS: February  14, 2015, 11 am -2 pm.  In recognition/celebration  of Black History Month, State Parks Staff will discuss and demonstrate the tremendous influence of African and Caribbean peoples to the cooking heritage of the Antebellum South.  Visitors will receive printed menus and recipes of all dishes prepared during this demonstration, highlighting the specific African and Caribbean influences in each recipe. An overview of the history of African-American enslavement, specifically in Louisiana, followed by a more detailed look into enslaved life at Rosedown. Also discussed will be the duties and accomplishments of the inhabitants of Rosedown, including a walking tour of outbuildings on the grounds. Farmer’s Market

Unbelievably fresh and delicious produce and baked goods – and fresh cut flowers, too – are at the market every Thursday from noon until 5 pm. Last week I purchased tomatoes, yellow squash, lettuce, corn on the cob, potatoes, bell peppers, heirloom red okra, garlic and spaghetti squash. Yum!

White Linen Night

This Saturday night, the St. Francisville Main Street is again bringing to life White Linen Night from 5pm until 9pm. Merchants along the trolley line will have red hot specials for customers, and local restaurants are offering tastes from their menus to entice you to dinner after the fun is over. Music will be performed throughout the route. So much is being planned, and here is a preview:

GDH Day Spa on Jackson Street is offering jewelry by EveAnna Gomez and music by Alaina Richard from 5 pm to 7 pm.

Miles Blair Salon on Commerce Street will feature Bayou Moon Candles and jewelry by Sherry Kohlett.

Hillcrest Gardens & Interiors will offer samplings of Sin in a Tin, a demonstration of Lampe Berger, and refreshments by Sonny’s Pizza.

Avondale Antiques on Commerce Street will host Anne Hornsbeck and her watercolor paintings, feature pottery by Craig Roth, and offer tastes from the Oxbow Restaurant.

Trends Salon on Commerce Street will have displays by artists Lisa Horn, Lyn Lokey, Janet Ballard, Martha Singer, and Rae Lynne Thomas, photography by Kellie Douglas, jewelry by Molly Porter, and will feature Allana.Laine Vintage Clothing and Accessories. Desserts will be supplied by SugarPlum Bake Shop.

The Wine Parlor at the St. Francisville Inn on Commerce Street will display photography by Jill Janss and Patrick Walsh, a book signing by Anne Butler to feature her works: Spirit of St. Francisville with photographer Darrell Chitty; Comprehensive Guide to Louisiana Swamp Tours (new); Pelican Guide to the Plantation Homes of Louisiana (new edition); Audubon Plantation Country Cookbook; Bayou Plantation Country Cookbook; Acadian Plantation Country Cookbook; and Weep For the Living. Karla Dietz will show Sipalda Designs, and music will be The Fugitive Poets from 7:30 pm to 9 pm.

Backwoods Gallery in their new location on Ferdinand Street will highlight hanging art by Joe Savell, Dahn Savell, Frances Durham, Krista Roche and Murrell Butler. Refreshments will be offered by Magnolia Café.

Destinee’s Clay Pot next to Town Hall on Ferdinand Street will have a book signing by Violet Pate, author of Aunt Shug’s Favorite Plantation Recipes Cookbook.

Toni L. Ladnier, CPA, and R. Ladnier, Jr. Photography on Ferdinand Street will feature artist in residence, Andy Ladnier, photographer. Guest artists include Joseph “Bear” Patric, illustrations, and Regina Meadows Rifkin, paintings. Refreshments will be presented by Heirloom Cuisine, and there will be a drawing for a portrait sitting.

The Mosspickers will play from 6 pm until 7:30 pm in the parking lot between the Ladniers and Miller on Main.

Miller on Main and The Massage Clinic on Ferdinand Street will feature pottery by Michael Miller and Miller on Main will provide refreshments.

St. Francisville Arts and Antiques on Ferdinand Street will have refreshments by Wing It Grill. The West Feliciana Parish Library on Ferdinand Street will show stained glass by Marjorie Blake. Music will be performed by Ben Bell and the Bedlam Triflers from 7 pm until 8:30 pm.

The Shanty Too on Ferdinand Street will feature music by Lyn Brossett at 5 pm, refreshments by Eight Sisters Soul Food, and displays from the Angola Museum.

West Feliciana Historical Society Museum on Ferdinand Street will host a book signing by Jamie S. Achee, author of Granny’s Gifts: An Inheritance of Character. Carin Carlson will display her paintings, and Que Pasa will offer refreshments.

Garden Symposium Park on the corner of Ferdinand and Royal Streets will be the site of music by Kim Smith Live with Cheney Hotard and Jason Smith from 5 pm until 6:30 pm.

Harrington Gallery on Royal Street will feature art by Herschel Harrington, refreshments by Heirloom Cuisine and music by Kevin Johnson from 7 pm until 8:30 pm.

Grandmother’s Buttons on Royals Street will be introducing the new Fall Line of 2009. Audubon Café will serve refreshments, and Nancy Roppolo will play music from 5:30 pm until 7 pm.

Bohemianville Antiques, located in the old site of Backwoods Gallery on Commerce Street, will host artist in residence C.C. Lockwood and guest artist Donna Kilbourne. Music by The Laughing Lizards will be from 5 pm until 6:30 pm.

BirdMan Coffee & Books on Commerce Street will show off the works of artists in residence George Ufford, mobiles; Doris & Joe Abadie, birdhouses; Roland Barber, hand-carved songbirds; and Hollywood Vintage, gift baskets. Outside will be booths of The Arts Market Artists.

Sage Hill Antiques & Gifts on Commerce Street will feature their artists in residence Wendell Dietz, furniture; Laura McClendon, jewelry and art; and Sennod, jewelry. Refreshments will be served up by Heirloom Cuisine while music by Local Traffic will be performed from 7:15 pm until 9 pm.

A Day at Locust Grove

Explore the unique and rich history of the Locust Grove Cemetery, from the history of the family members buried there, including General Eleazar Wheelock Ripley and Sarah Knox Taylor Davis, to methods of grave preservation, and cemetery folklore. The Duel at High Noon

Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site presents this program that will discuss the history of dueling, exploring some of the most well-known duels and duelists in history. Additionally, there will be demonstrations of the different types of duels of the past, as well as a discussion of the rules that governed such contests. It all happens on Saturday, August 29 at noon, of course, on the grounds near the main parking area. For more information, call 635-3110.

Wines Of Spain

Farmers’ Market

Thursdays from 1 pm to 5 pm at the 4-H barn you’ll find some of the best produce around!  Pumpkins, squash, greens, lettuce, fresh bake breads and pies, homemade jellies and preserves, sweet potatoes, and much more.  Please help support your local farmers!

 

CC Lockwood Book Signing

Movie Under the Stars

Monster House is the feature film being shown at Parker Park on Friday, October 19 at 6 pm.  Admission is one canned good for the West Feliciana Parish Food Bank.  Wear your costumes for the costume parade, and there will be bags to decorate for your trick or treating.  Concessions will be available from the Women’s Service League so bring your lawn chair or blanket and enjoy!  This event is sponsored by the St. Francisville Main Street so for more information call Laurie at 635-3873.

Lost Arts Saturdays

Rosedown Plantation presents the lost art of Spanish Moss Preparation on Saturday, October 20 from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm.  These demonstrations of the “Lost Arts” of the 19th century occur every third Saturday of each month.  For more information call 635-3110.

 

Chamber Music Series

The Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra will perform on Saturday, October 20, at 8pm at Grace Episcopal Church.  Tickets are available at the Bank of St. Francisville or by calling BRSO at 225-383-0500.

 

The Dead of Locust Grove

 Visitors are invited to Locust Grove State Historic Site on Saturday, October 20, to discover who is buried in the historic plantation graveyard in the program, The Dead of Locust Grove.  Between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., visitors to the cemetery can learn about both the famous and the not-so-famous inhabitants of the cemetery. Locust Grove SHS is the setting for the one-acre 200-year-old Locust Grove cemetery which is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.  Admission to the historic site is free.  For more information, call 635-3739.

 

Life Changing Skills “Coping with Stress”

The Institute of Mindfulness presents a day with The Master, Mindfulness Meditation Master Thich Dao Quang on Sunday, October 21^st at Hemingbough Conference Center.  Registration begins at 1:00 p.m., and the day will end at 7:00.  An evening meal is included, specially prepared by Hemingbough’s chef Ida Cage.  Seating is limited so call for your reservation at 505-3403.

Homecoming

West Feliciana High School celebrates homecoming on Friday, October 26 with a parade through St. Francisville beginning at 2:35.  Pre-game festivities begin at 6:30 with the game against Capitol High School at 7 pm.

 

Soul Stories at Rosedown Plantation

On Saturday, October 27 the Rosedown Main House will be in mourning as Rosedown Interpretive Staff re-enacts the funeral service for a member of the historic Turnbull-Bowman family. Throughout the day, the house will be decorated according to 19th century mourning customs and re-enactors will be dressed in 19th century-style mourning costumes. The funeral service will be held at 4 pm inside the main house. Following the funeral, costumed Rosedown Interpretive Staff will portray the spirits of various Turnbull-Bowman family members who have returned to the main house from their graves. The “spirits” will talk about their lives and share reminiscences from their pasts. The funeral starts at 4 pm, and Soul Stories are told between 5:30 and 7 pm.  For more information call 635-3110.

 

Exploring Southern Gardens

The 19^th Annual Southern Garden Symposium & Workshops is scheduled for the weekend of October 26 and 27 at various venues throughout St. Francisville including Afton Villa Gardens, Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site, Market Hall on Royal Street, Jackson Hall at Grace Episcopal Church and Hemingbough.  Pre-registration is required by calling 635-3738.

 

The Myrtles Halloween Extravaganza

Audubon Fall Festival to Benefit St. Jude

Yellow Leaf Arts Festival

The 5^th Annual Yellow Leaf Arts Festival will be held on October 27^th and 28^th from 10:00 until 5:00 in the area in front of BirdMan Coffee, behind Magnolia Cafe'.  Artists from jewelry makers, painters, stained glass artists, photographers to woodcarvers will be displaying and selling their work. Some artists will even be demonstrating!  There will be live music off and on all weekend including on Saturday: 1:00 Annie Fergus, 2:00 Villanelle, 3:00 Kevin Johnson; and on Sunday: 1:00 James Williams, 3:00 The West Feliciana Community Singers.

 

"Vibes in the 'ville"

This event was so successful that it’s back with an encore performance.  Join us for Music under the Stars in Parker Park with The Fugitive Poets after the Yellow Leaf Arts Festival, October 27, Saturday night from 6 – 9 pm.

November Preview

Celebrate 200 years of St. Francisville during the weekend of November 9 through the 11.  Starting on Friday local author Anne Butler and photographer Darrell Chitty will be on hand to sign and make a presentation on their new book THE SPIRIT OF ST. FRANCISVILLE. The event will be held at Old Market Hall on Royal Street starting at 6:30pm. This will kick off our weekend 200-year celebration in conjunction with the Louisiana Main to Main project.

 

Saturday, November 10, will begin with Birthday sales by the downtown merchants, and a Quilt Show in Parker Park. The day will cap off with the showing of “The Reaping” in the 4-H barn.

Swing for Scholarships Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, November 12 with registration and range open at 10:30.  Lunch buffet begins at 11 and shot gun start is at 12 noon.  Proceeds from this tournament benefit the Swing for Scholarships Fund and the Greater St. Francisville Chamber of Commerce.  Teams are $500 and there are $200 hole sponsorships available.  For more information or to register, call 635-6717.  Deadline to enter is November 7.
