The tour provides a wonderful opportunity to visit beautiful and unique private and public gardens in the parish. Master Gardeners will be on hand at all the private gardens to provide information. Tickets are $15 for the day and will be available at the St. Francisville Town Hall the day of the tour beginning at 8:30 am and from the West Feliciana AgCenter office in advance.  For more information call 225-635-3614.

Ticket holders are eligible for admission to other local attractions on the day of the Spring Stroll, including Rosedown, Afton Villa, St. Mary's Church and Audubon State Historical Site (Oakley Plantation).

Community Arts Show Planned by Arts for All

Arts for All, which is an arts organization that fosters the arts in West Feliciana Parish, is sponsoring a community art show on the weekend of March 31-April 1.  Anyone 18 years of age or older may enter one piece of visual art, which will be shown that weekend at Market Hall on Royal Street in St. Francisville.  Since that is the weekend of the Garden Club's Spring Stroll, people will be able to view both area gardens and the art of local citizens.

According to Lynn Wood, immediate Past President of Arts for All,  "We are excited about this show, primarily because we feel that there are artists out there in our parish who have not yet shown their work here, so it will be like discovering jewels among us!  Please consider exhibiting in this show, whether you are a new artist, a 'closet' artist, or an artist well known to us-- this is truly a community art show."

Anyone who wishes to exhibit a piece of art should bring it by Market Hall on Friday, March 30 between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. or call 225-721-1296 for another time if these times are not convenient.

The art show and reception will be from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 31 and noon to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 1.

Area artists are encouraged to show a favorite piece of their art—sculpture, ceramics, two-dimensional visual art of all kinds--on this weekend.  Arts for All President Rebecca Landry said, "This show continues a well-honored tradition.  St. Francisville has supported and encouraged artists since John James Audubon's day.  I hope that many area artists will participate in this show."

Pilgrimage This Weekend

  Journey Stories

February 12, - March 19, 2012

St. Francisville is now making preparations to host the travelling Smithsonian Institution exhibit called Journey Stories, which opens the first week in February in the West Feliciana Historical Society's museum/visitor center on Ferdinand Street right in the heart of St. Francisville's National Register Historic District.

This fascinating exhibition has been designed to encourage small towns across the country to examine in depth just who we are and how we got here, revealing nationwide migration patterns as early pioneers braved the perils of travel in the days of dangerous ocean shipwrecks and riverboat sinkings, runaway teams and overturned wagons on rude rutted dirt tracks, plus pirates and outlaws, wild animals and wild Indians.

As compelling as these national records are, the localized ones are even more so. St. Francisville certainly had some unique settlement routes, from the Mississippi River bringing early Anglo pioneers to an area that reminded them of the rolling hills of the Old Country, to the sunken traces worn deep into the loessial soils by horse-drawn coaches and covered wagons, to the country's earliest standard-gauge railroad line.

Anytime throughout the 6 weeks Journey Stories will be in St.Francisville a Drive Through History (CD Driving Tour) will be available at the Museum; 11757 Ferdinand St. For more information please call Helen Williams at 225-635-6330

Spring blooms beckon Audubon Pilgrims to St. Francisville, LA
by Anne Butler
audubon pilgrimage
The forty-first annual Audubon Pilgrimage March 16, 17 and 18, 2012, celebrates a southern spring in St. Francisville, the glorious garden spot of Louisiana's English Plantation Country. For over four decades the sponsoring West Feliciana Historical Society has thrown open the doors of significant historic structures to commemorate artist-naturalist John James Audubon's stay as he painted a number of his famous bird folios, and 2012, being the 200th anniversary of Louisiana statehood, promises to be a spectacular tour.

APPROACH TO NEW AUDUBON BRIDGE BETWEEN ST. FRANCISVILLE AND NEW ROADS SALUTES TWO GENERALS
by Anne Butler

Audubon BridgeThe historic little towns of St. Francisville and New Roads have been separated over the years by many factors: cultural and linguistic differences, landscape and crop differences, and even by the mighty Mississippi River. New Roads was French, flat, sugarcane fields. St. Francisville was traditionally Anglo, hilly, with cotton the main cash crop of the 19th century.
And yet, over the years, the two communities have been inextricably bound together as well, beginning in the late 1800s when Capuchin monks from flood-prone Catholic Pointe Coupee had to cross the river to the high bluffs of St. Francisville to bury their dead. Now a beautiful new bridge, the country's longest cable-stayed structure,
