Ferry Temporarily Closed

While a small fuel leak is repaired, the St. Francisville – New Roads ferry will not be operating.  We’ll send an update as soon as it goes back online.

 

Better Bird Watching Program and Field Trip

Tonight, Wednesday April 29th, Audubon SHS will be hosting Mr. Joe LaFleur, author of Better Bird Watching, a series of DVDs.  From 6:30pm to 7:00pm Mr. LaFleur will show his DVD on bird watching at Audubon State Historic Sites Theater free of charge.  After the DVD viewing Mr. LaFleur has offered to take a guided tour of Oakley’s grounds as a field trip to practice hands on bird identification.  This aspect of the program should run an hour or so.  Please get the word out to all our dedicated birders that Mr. LaFleur is coming to Oakley specifically for this program.  For more information, please call Daniel Wilcox at 225-635-3739.

 

Crawfish on the Patio

The Carriage House Restaurant at The Myrtles has boiled crawfish every Wednesday night.  Service is on the patio – great atmosphere!

 

Monday Supper at the BirdMan

Every Monday night there is supper served at the BirdMan.  Lynn chooses the menu, and the musicians just show up!

 

Relay for Life

May 1 is the date for this very special event that raises money for the American Cancer Society.  The night begins with a walk for survivors while luminaries burn in remembrance of those who have lost the fight against this debilitating disease.  There are many activities planned, and the Men’s Beauty Contest . . . or is it the “Best Legs” contest . . . has the most interest.  Rumor has it that Mayor Billy D’Aquilla will be a “contestant” this year!

Flint Knapping

Will They Be Serving Haegis?

On Saturday, May 9, from 10 am-4 pm, Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site hosts its Scottish Heritage Festival, a celebration of the Scottish heritage of Daniel Turnbull, Rosedown Plantation’s original owner. For this day, site staff will don the Scottish-style dress of Turnbull ancestry. Guests will experience vintage Scottish music and dancing, and the Caledonian Society of Baton Rouge will be marching with drums and bagpipes. The Mirror of Graces

19th Century Etiquette and Fashions will be the topic of the day on Saturday, May 9 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at Audubon State Historic Site – Oakley House. Third Weekend Events

Avondale Antiques will be open the third weekend, May 15 through 17.  Store hours are Friday and Saturday from 9 am until 5 pm and on Sunday from 11 am until 5 pm.

Ball Tournaments

Happenings

Here’s what’s happening around West Feliciana:

 

Jeep Jamboree

They’re back!  Jeeps of all kinds, types, sizes and colors will be around town this weekend for the annual Jeep Jamboree.  While not a spectator sport, you’ll be able to see them when they pass through or stop in to shop and browse a bit.  And I’m sure they’ll be able to find some mud somewhere!

 

A Day of Love: The Rosedown Wedding

Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site invites visitors to a day of music, dancing, graceful ladies in beautiful gowns, and handsome gentlemen in formal evening dress.  On Saturday, April 25, love is in the air and two historic plantation houses and families are united on this day, as costumed re-enactors present the wedding of Sarah Turnbull of Rosedown to James Pirrie Bowman of Oakley. Dressed in 19th century-style costumes, Interpretive Rangers Sasha Traña and James Smith will depict the young bride and groom, Sarah Turnbull and James Bowman. Curator Polly Luttrull will portray Martha Turnbull, the bride's mother, and Manager Patricia Aleshire will serve as Maid of Honor, Rosina Benoist, the bride's cousin. Other site staff members will round out the cast as additional family and friends. The wedding service will be performed at 1 pm in the Carriage Court in front of the Main House, and will be followed by a reception.  For more information, call 635-3110.

 

Girl Scout Program at Audubon SHS

On April 26, at Audubon State Historic Site, from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. there will be demonstrations that include period crafts, nature talks and hikes.  The girls, ages 9-12 will complete their Folk Arts badge and the girls, ages 5-9 will complete their Watching Wildlife badges. Battle of Jackson Crossroads

Our neighbors in East Feliciana will hold this annual re-enactment next weekend, April 25 and 26, in Jackson.  Visitors can experience both the sights and the sounds of the Civil War as the Union and Confederate armies clash on the rolling hills of the Felicianas.  For more information, call 634-1433 or visit www.battleofjacksoncrossroads.org.

Happenings

New Ferry Hours

The St. Francisville/New Roads ferry is now running from 5:00 am until 9:00 pm every day.  Thank you, DOTD!!

 

Highway Construction

Crews are working steadily on the four-laning of Highway 61 so please watch for flagmen and be prepared to stop.  It would also be helpful to add at least 15 minutes to your journey when going through this area.  Some areas are one lane only while some lanes have shifted to the shoulders.  Please inform your guests of this construction delay.

 

More Construction

Highway 965 is also under construction so visitors to Audubon State Historic Site – Oakley will be delayed a bit as well.  The road is undergoing extensive re-building and is all torn up from just below Independence all the way to Highway 966.  Guests at The Lodge at The Bluffs will also encounter this construction zone so please be aware!

 

The Lodge at The Bluffs

Yes, it is still open and is taking reservations.  Emily McDavid is the new manager, and she and Heather Rodriquez are keeping things running.  Former Manager Joe Anne Connell has retired and is relaxing and enjoying herself.  The Lodge has 33 rooms available for overnight guests, and office hours are from 8 am until 6 pm.  They can be reached at 634-5222. New B & B Open

Bayou Sara Auction Depot will hold its monthly antique auction this Friday evening, April 17 at 6:30 pm.  Located in the old Bayou Sara train depot, a preview of items can be viewed at www.bayou-auction.com.

 

Avondale Antiques

This shop on Commerce Street will be open this weekend, Friday and Saturday from 9 am until 5 pm and on Sunday from 11 am until 5 pm.  Michelle Roth will be hosting her gardens on Saturday for the Spring Stroll, but her husband Craig will “man” the store.  Michelle will have the rest of the time at the shop while Craig finishes up some other jobs . . . pottery maybe??

 

Spring Stroll Garden Tour

Louisiana Master Gardeners of the LSU AgCenter invites you to experience four unique local gardens at this self-guided garden tour set for Saturday, April 18 from 9 am until 1 pm.  The farm of Buddy Metz will be featured as well as the gardens of Tina Reid at Coyote Creek and Michelle & Craig Roth at Avondale.  Tour tickets are $10 and may be purchased on the day of the tour at the tour headquarters which happens to be St. Francisville Town Hall.   All proceeds of the tour go to local 4-H scholarship and local farmer's market.  Ticket holders are eligible for door prizes and admission to other local attractions.  For more information call 225-635-3614 or email abrock@agcenter.lsu.edu.  This event is sponsored by the Feliciana Horticultural Association, Ins-N-Outs Nursery, and The Myrtles Plantation.

 

Annual Spring Rodeo

The Wildest Show in the South returns this weekend, April 18 and 19, when Angola Prison hosts its annual Spring Rodeo.  Gates open from 9 am until 5 pm, and the rodeo begins at 2 pm.  There will be a full day of fun for all with food, music, hobby crafts, kiddie land and photos with the Angola bloodhounds.  For advanced tickets, call 655-2607 or 655-2030.  Please be prepared for longer than usual traffic delays due to the Highway 61 construction.

 

Free Day at the Park Events

This Saturday in recognition of 75 years of the State Parks system, admission fees are waived at all State Parks and State Historic Sites.  Here in West Feliciana that includes Audubon State Historic Site, Locust Grove State Historic Site and Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site.  In nearby East Feliciana, Centenary State Historic Site and Port Hudson State Historic Site are included in this free day.  Below are interpretive programs at Audubon and Rosedown for this weekend:

 

Lost Arts of the Nineteenth Century

Presented by Rosedown Interpretive Ranger James Smith, this series of monthly programming is intended to introduce and demonstrate various historic arts, activities and crafts that are little seen today.  The "Lost Art" that will be presented this month is the shaving horse.  During the program, Smith will explain to visitors the origins, history and use of the shaving horse in shaping wood pieces into tool handles, rounded chair pieces, canes, staffs and more.  Also discussed will be how the craft has evolved over time.  Smith will be presenting demonstrations of the shaving horse at the Old Garden Barn on the Rosedown grounds.   The program will be held between 11 am and 3 pm. 

 

Antique Roses Seminar

Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site kicks off the Spring and Summer gardening seasons with a Horticultural Seminar held on the plantation grounds.  This Saturday, April 18, Site Manager Patricia Aleshire will present a seminar on "Antique Roses."  The lecture session will present a slide introduction and discussion of the historical background of numerous varieties of heirloom roses, as well as the care needed for these beautiful plants to thrive in a southern garden.  Following the lecture, Aleshire will lead a walking tour through selected areas of Rosedown's historic gardens to view various antique rose varieties on site.  The program will begin at 10 am in the Rosedown Conference Room. 

 

Ecology at Audubon SHS

On Saturday, April 18 from 10 am until 4 pm, the interpretive staff at Audubon State Historic Site presents the Ecosystem of Oakley Pond. This program will discuss the different ecological life cycles found on the plantation and will be highlighted by the use of turtles, frogs, snails and fish.

Happenings

I hope that you all have received the invitation I forwarded to you from the Office of the Lt. Governor regarding his press conference here next week.  Please help us spread the word so that we can have a large turnout to show our support for all of our State Historic Sites but especially for Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site, Audubon State Historic Site and Locust Grove SHS.  We should also note that both Centenary SHS and Port Hudson SHS in East Feliciana are important to the area as well since all of these sites partner on interpretive programs.  Remember, it’s Tuesday, April 14 at 1:00 pm at Rosedown.  Since it will be during our schools’ spring break, it might be a great idea to have our children there to show that this issue is important to them, too.

 

Casting Call

If you ever thought you might want to be in a movie, there will be a casting call on Thursday, April 9, for a feature film that will be filmed in the St. Francisville area.  Show up at the Quality Inn on Highway 61 between 3 pm and 7 pm with a pen to fill out a casting form.  Casting representatives will take your picture, and all types are needed – men, women, children, all ages!  The movie is called Jonah Hex and will star Josh Brolin, John Malkovich and Megan Fox.  It’s an action, drama, thriller, Western in need of extras.  This is a paid job and you will have to be available during the work week.

Audubon Nature School Day

Area schools are invited to Audubon State Historic Site to experience Audubon Nature School Day on Friday, April 3. From 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., area schools can experience the wonder of nature, as it exists in the Felicianas.  Interactive stations will be set up providing classes with opportunities for hands-on learning. The stations vary from nature walks to crafts to outdoor experiences with both the plant and wild life of the area. All schools wishing to participate in this special program must pre-register with the site. Thinking Green

Symphony Spring Concert

The St. Francisville Symphony Association is offering its Spring Concert on Saturday April 4 at 8:00 pm.  The Baton Rouge Symphony Chamber Ensemble, Timothy Muffitt, Music Director, and David Torns, Conductor, will be playing selections from Constantides, Prokofiev, and Schumann.  The concert will be held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in St. Francisville.  The beauty of the music is enhanced by intimate setting with superior acoustics and easy parking.  Tickets are available at the Bank of St. Francisville or at the door.

Spring Garden Stroll

Louisiana Master Gardeners of the LSU AgCenter invites you to experience four unique local gardens at this self-guided garden tour set for Saturday, April 18 from 9 am until 1 pm.  The farms of Buddy Metz and Lloyd Lindsey will be featured as well as the gardens of Tina Reid at Coyote Creek and Michelle & Craig Roth at Avondale.  Tour tickets are $10 and may be purchased on the day of the tour at the tour headquarters which happens to be St. Francisville Town Hall.   All proceeds of the tour go to local 4-H scholarship and local farmer's market.  Ticket holders are eligible for door prizes and admission to other local attractions.  For more information call 225-635-3614 or email abrock@agcenter.lsu.edu.  This event is sponsored by the Feliciana Horticultural Association, Ins-N-Outs Nursery, and The Myrtles Plantation.

 

Annual Spring Rodeo

The Wildest Show in the South returns on the weekend of April 18 and 19 when Angola Prison hosts its annual Spring Rodeo.  Gates open from 9 am until 5 pm, and the rodeo begins at 2 pm.  There will be a full day of fun for all with food, music, hobby crafts, kiddie land and photos with the Angola bloodhounds.  For advanced tickets, call 655-2607 or 655-2030.

 

Lost Arts of the Nineteenth Century

On Saturday, April 18, visitors are invited to come to Rosedown, to learn about nineteenth-century arts and activities.  Presented by Rosedown Interpretive Ranger James Smith, this series of monthly programming is intended to introduce and demonstrate various historic arts, activities and crafts that are little seen today.  The "Lost Art" that will be presented this month is the shaving horse.  During the program, Smith will explain to visitors the origins, history and use of the shaving horse in shaping wood pieces into tool handles, rounded chair pieces, canes, staffs and more.  Also discussed will be how the craft has evolved over time.  Smith will be presenting demonstrations of the shaving horse at the Old Garden Barn on the Rosedown grounds.   The program will be held between 11 am and 3 pm.  For more information, call 225-635-3110.

 

Antique Roses Seminar

Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site kicks off the Spring and Summer gardening seasons with a Horticultural Seminar held on the plantation grounds.  On Saturday, April 18, Site Manager Patricia Aleshire will present a seminar on "Antique Roses."  The lecture session will present a slide introduction and discussion of the historical background of numerous varieties of heirloom roses, as well as the care needed for these beautiful plants to thrive in a southern garden.  Following the lecture, Aleshire will lead a walking tour through selected areas of Rosedown's historic gardens to view various antique rose varieties on site.  The program will begin at 10 am in the Rosedown Conference Room.  As a special "Free Day in the Park" program offered by the Office of State Parks, admission fees are waived for the day.  For more information, call 635-3110.

 

Ecology at Audubon SHS

On Saturday, April 18 from 10 am until 4 pm, the interpretive staff at Audubon State Historic Site presents the Ecosystem of Oakley Pond.
