Happenings

Here’s what’s happening around West Feliciana:

Jeep Jamboree

They’re back!  Jeeps of all kinds, types, sizes and colors will be around town this weekend for the annual Jeep Jamboree.  While not a spectator sport, you’ll be able to see them when they pass through or stop in to shop and browse a bit.  And I’m sure they’ll be able to find some mud somewhere!

A Day of Love: The Rosedown Wedding

Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site invites visitors to a day of music, dancing, graceful ladies in beautiful gowns, and handsome gentlemen in formal evening dress.  On Saturday, April 25, love is in the air and two historic plantation houses and families are united on this day, as costumed re-enactors present the wedding of Sarah Turnbull of Rosedown to James Pirrie Bowman of Oakley. Dressed in 19th century-style costumes, Interpretive Rangers Sasha TraƱa and James Smith will depict the young bride and groom, Sarah Turnbull and James Bowman. Curator Polly Luttrull will portray Martha Turnbull, the bride's mother, and Manager Patricia Aleshire will serve as Maid of Honor, Rosina Benoist, the bride's cousin. Other site staff members will round out the cast as additional family and friends. The wedding service will be performed at 1 pm in the Carriage Court in front of the Main House, and will be followed by a reception.  For more information, call 635-3110.

Battle of Jackson Crossroads

Our neighbors in East Feliciana will hold this annual re-enactment next weekend, April 25 and 26, in Jackson.  Visitors can experience both the sights and the sounds of the Civil War as the Union and Confederate armies clash on the rolling hills of the Felicianas.  For more information, call 634-1433 or visit www.battleofjacksoncrossroads.org.

Better Bird Watching Program and Field Trip

On Wednesday April 29th Audubon SHS will be hosting Mr. Joe LaFleur, author of Better Bird Watching, a series of DVDs.  From 6:30pm to 7:00pm Mr. LaFleur will show his DVD on bird watching at Audubon State Historic Sites Theater free of charge.  After the DVD viewing Mr. LaFleur has offered to take a guided tour of Oakley’s grounds as a field trip to practice hands on bird identification.  This aspect of the program should run an hour or so.  Please get the word out to all our dedicated birders that Mr. LaFleur is coming to Oakley specifically for this program.  For more information, please call Daniel Wilcox at 225-635-3739.
