The Day the War Stopped

This weekend brings this annual event which commemorates a day in history which, for too brief a moment, the fighting of the Civil War stopped and human dignity took center stage.  Beginning on Friday evening at 7 pm, graveside histories and an historical presentation will be held at Grace Episcopal Church, followed at 8 pm with an open house at the Masonic Lodge.  A parade down Ferdinand Street gets things started on Saturday, June 14 at 10:30 am, ending at the Masonic Lodge where lunch will be served from 11 am until 12:30 pm.  There will also be a vintage musical concert from 11:30 until 12:30 at Jackson Hall, then vintage dancers from 12:30 to 1:30 pm.  The highlight of the weekend’s events then begin – the drama and re-enactment of the burial for Union Cmdr. John Hart.  For more information, visit the information center in the Historical Society Museum for a brochure with a complete schedule or visit www.daythewarstopped.net.
