Plantation Country Romance: February in St. Francisville is for Lovers

When Martha Barrow of Highland Plantation returned to the St. Francisville area after completing her education at Madame Legoin's fashionable educational institute in Philadelphia, she was 18 and in the sweet bloom of youth. She quickly caught the eye of handsome planter Daniel Turnbull, ten years her senior. Writing of the relationship some years hence, one of their granddaughters would say, "A mutual romance immediately commenced, little Cupid cast his darts and their hearts that instant caught the sunshine they through life had sought." They were joined in matrimony in 1828 and their descendants for generations would occupy their magnificent home called Rosedown, now a state historic site where the wedding of the Turnbull's daughter Sarah is regularly reenacted.

Early Travels to St. Francisville, LA, Led to Some Lurid Descriptions

The four-laning of US Highway 61 and the new Mississippi River Bridge make it easy to reach St. Francisville these days, but in the 19th century, travels to this picturesque little Mississippi River village were fraught with perils and gave rise to some spectacularly gruesome newspaper dispatches.

In February, as the West Feliciana Historical Society museum, on Ferdinand St. in St. Francisville, hosts the travelling Smithsonian Institute exhibit called Journey Stories, the focus is on who we are and how we got here. St. Francisville and its now-vanished sister city Bayou Sara beneath the bluffs have got some fascinating tales to tell in this regard.

LEE BARBER, with Bruce Golden and our wonderful friends Jodi James and Heather Feierabend.   Lee is a wonderful musician, songwriter and artist (many of you have heard his music and seen his paintings before (he happens to be my extremely talented brother). Lee is coming from Austin where he lives and his friend, percussionist Bruce Golden is coming from Jackson Mississippi. It is so much fun to watch these two play together! Jodi and Heather will be singing some of their tunes together with some sweet harmonies- I am anxious to hear that!! $15.00 cover, there will be no food served for this listening room evening, and our usual coffee shop fare will be available before, after and during the break.

Baton Rouge Symphony's Chamber and Brass Series in St. Francisville

Friday, December 02, 2011, 07:00pm - 09:00pm

Tickets to the annual St. Francisville Symphony Association's season of concerts by the Baton Rouge Symphony's Chamber and Brass groups are now on sale. This year's exciting series is as follows: December 2, Christmas Brass and Percussion at Hemingbough with dessert reception at 7:00 p.m.; and March 9, String Quartet at Grace Episcopal Church at 8:00 p.m.

Tickets are available at the Bank of St. Francisville, from members of the St. Francisville Symphony Association or from the BRSO Ticket office at 225-383-0500. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Season tickets are $50 ($48 for seniors) or $20 per performance. Children of ticket holders are free with an adult for the first and third concerts.

Visitors are invited to Audubon State Historic Site to experience A Colonial Christmas on Saturday, Dec. 3.

Oakley Plantation House will be trimmed in the style of the 1800s. From 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., visitors will see a plantation Christmas dinner setting and rooms decorated for the holiday season. The plantation kitchen will feature the day's meal being prepared over an open hearth and costumed staff will explain how the holiday celebration differed from what is traditional in modern times. As an added feature, candlelight tours of Oakley House will be given from 6 to 8 p.m. During the tour, traditional holiday snacks such as roasted chestnuts, fig puddings and wassail will be served. There will also be a period dance with visitors welcome.

The Cotton Experience: Variable Dates September through November, 2011, 10 am-4 pm. This brief encounter allows guests to experience the job of cotton picking. During these months visitors are able to walk amongst rows of cotton plants, pluck bolls of cotton from the plants and complete this task by removing the seeds from the bolls. Once the cotton is picked and deseeded, visitors can drop the cotton in an authentic "cotton sack." For more information, call 225-635-3110

Tickets to the annual St. Francisville Symphony Association's season of concerts by the Baton Rouge Symphony's Chamber and Brass groups are now on sale. This year's exciting series is as follows: December 2, Christmas Brass and Percussion at Hemingbough with dessert reception at 7:00 p.m.; and March 9, String Quartet at Grace Episcopal Church at 8:00 p.m.

Vino in the Ville is a team event. Each team is made of 2 or 3 people. To participate, each team pays $60 to register and brings 3 bottles of the same wine (either a Pinot Grigio or a Pinot Noir). Your bottles are entered into the tasting pool and winners are rewarded with wine prizes. So, grab a friend and three bottles of your favorite wine, and join us as we raise our glass and raise funds for local philanthropies. The Cotton Experience: Variable Dates September through November, 2011, 10 am-4 pm. This brief encounter allows guests to experience the job of cotton picking. During these months visitors are able to walk amongst rows of cotton plants, pluck bolls of cotton from the plants and complete this task by removing the seeds from the bolls. Jodi and Heather will be singing some of their tunes together with some sweet harmonies- I am anxious to hear that!! $15.00 cover, there will be no food served for this listening room evening, and our usual coffee shop fare will be available before, after and during the break.

West Feliciana 4-H is almost finished taking orders for its 11^th annual sweet potato fundraiser.

We're selling 40-lb boxes of baking-size kiln-dried Louisiana sweet potatoes for $20 per box. They are to be delivered to "the old 4-H barn" in St. Francisville starting the week of November 7^th. We'll accept orders through October 28^th (check or money order) at the LSU Ag Center's West Feliciana office, 5924 Commerce St. (P.O. Box 1934), St. Francisville, LA 70775.Sales benefit the West Feliciana 4-H Foundation. Funds are used for incentives and awards, to help offset transportation costs for 4-H events, to purchase equipment, to fund a local scholarship, and to purchase educational materials for 4-H project activities.

The Myrtles Plantation 2011 Halloween Experience is scheduled for Friday, October 28-Monday, October 31, 2011. Our hours are 6 pm-10 pm Friday, Saturday & Monday and 6 pm-9pm Sunday. ALL HALLOW'S EVE OF THE 1800s ON OCTOBER 28^th

Visitors are invited to Audubon State Historic Site on October 28, to discover Halloween traditions of the 1800s during the program All Hallows Eve. Between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m., there will be an interactive program held throughout the grounds of Oakley illustrating Halloween practices of the 1800s in America. Included will be the origins of pumpkin carving and tales of mystery, apple bobbing, an old fashioned maze, plus games and treats for the whole family to enjoy. "Halloween customs have changed over the past 200 years," says John House, site manager. "However, some of the traditions of those long-ago times are reflected, even today."

Rosedown Funeral Re-enactment and Soul Stories: October 29, 2011, Funeral: 3 pm; Soul Stories: 4 pm. The Rosedown Main House will be in mourning as Rosedown Interpretive Staff re-enacts the funeral service for a member of the historic Turnbull-Bowman family. Throughout the day, the house will be decorated according to 19^th century mourning customs and re-enactors will be dressed in 19^th century-style mourning costumes. The funeral service will be held at 3 pm inside the main house. Following the funeral, costumed Rosedown Interpretive Staff will portray the spirits of various Turnbull-Bowman family members who have returned to the main house from their graves. The "spirits" will talk about their lives and share reminiscences from their pasts.

Friends of the Library Annual Book Sale

The Friends of the West Feliciana Library will have its annual book sale at the St. Francisville Town Hall at11926 Ferdinand Street on Saturday, October 29 from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Darlene Reaves and Pat Heurtin are co-chairs of this event, which benefits both the people who attend this event as well as the West Feliciana Parish Library.

West Feliciana Parish Hospital will be hosting the annual health fair October 29, 9am till 2pm, as well. Various health screenings and vendors with health education will be available on site.

Southern Garden Symposium-October 14 & 15th

our 2011 program promises to be one of the most informative and entertaining ever. Friday's highlights include a floral design demonstration by the very popular Sybil Sylvester of Birmingham, Alabama; a wonderful presentation on old garden tools by Guilluame Pellerin of Normandy, France; and more. Lectures will continue on Saturday with programs by noted speakers including Mr. M. Lindsay Bierman, Editor-in-Chief of Southern Living and Linda Gay, Director of Houston, Texas' Mercer Arboretum. To top off each day, two of St. Francisville's loveliest private homes, Wyoming Plantation and White's Cottage, will open their doors for the Speakers' Gala and Saturday Tea respectively. As in previous years, we will offer for sale the finest garden books and tools as well as an array of southern plants to satisfy every desire. OLLI Welcomes Members and Non-members to October Programs
Members of OLLI have much to choose from in the month of October in addition to the roster of classes already announced and underway.   A free coffee welcomes members and non-members, fifty years of age and older who love learning, to get a peek into OLLI programming.

On October 18, Robert Ryder will be the guest speaker at a free coffee for members and non-members alike at 9:30 am at the First Baptist Church, Hwy 61 and Hwy. 10 in St. Francisville. Home-baked goods will be served.

Ryder, an LSU graduate and captain of LSU's Offensive team for the 1969 "once defeated, uninvited" LSU football team, will entertain attendees with his Tiger Tales. His stories, known by those on the sidelines and the players in the locker room, were not necessarily known even by the coaches. Ryder spent 33 years in the banking business in Louisiana before retiring in 2005 from JP Morgan Chase as Regional Chief Executive for Louisiana and Oklahoma. He has served as president of the LSU National "L" Club and as a member of both the LSU Athletic Council and the Charles McClendon Scholarship Foundation.

On October 20, members who have already signed up will enjoy a field trip to River Bend Power Plant, from 8:30 am to Noon, in St. Francisville. This trip is filled, but there are many openings for the October 21^st Nature Walk to Cat Island to see the wonderful giant cypress trees.   Participants will be carpooling from the parking lot at First Baptist Church at 9:30 am with the walk at Cat Island at 10:00. Al Troy will be leading the walk and there is no charge to members...

The Myrtles Plantation 2011 Halloween Experience is scheduled for Friday, October 28-Monday, October 31, 2011. Our hours are 6 pm-10 pm Friday, Saturday & Monday and 6 pm-9pm Sunday. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased in our Gift Shop. The Carriage House Restaurant will be serving off the menu in the dining room and food and beverages in The Courtyard. Friends of the Library Annual Book Sale

The Friends of the West Feliciana Library will have its annual book sale at the St. Francisville Town Hall at11926 Ferdinand Street on Saturday, October 29 from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Darlene Reaves and Pat Heurtin are co-chairs of this event, which benefits both the people who attend this event as well as the West Feliciana Parish Library.

West Feliciana Parish Hospital will be hosting the annual health fair October 29, 9am till 2pm, as well. Various health screenings and vendors with health education will be available on site.

We ask that all users of the Hike and Bike Trail and Archery Range Please sign in before entering at the designated area located at the trail head. All bike riders must wear a helmet while on the trail. The trail and archery range is used at your own risk. The hours of the trail and archery range are 8am - Dusk unless otherwise noted.
All volunteer trail and archery range maintenance must be authorized and coordinated by the West Feliciana Parish Parks and Recreation Park Operations Department. Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site

The Cotton Experience: Variable Dates September through November, 2011, 10 am-4 pm. This brief encounter allows guests to experience the job of cotton picking. During these months visitors are able to walk amongst rows of cotton plants, pluck bolls of cotton from the plants and complete this task by removing the seeds from the bolls. Once the cotton is picked and deseeded, visitors can drop the cotton in an authentic "cotton sack." For more information, call 225-635-3110

Southern Garden Symposium-October 14 & 15th

Our 2011 program promises to be one of the most informative and entertaining ever. Friday's highlights include a floral design demonstration by the very popular Sybil Sylvester of Birmingham, Alabama; a wonderful presentation on old garden tools by Guilluame Pellerin of Normandy, France; and more. Lectures will continue on Saturday with programs by noted speakers including Mr. M. Lindsay Bierman, Editor-in-Chief of Southern Living and Linda Gay, Director of Houston, Texas' Mercer Arboretum. To top off each day, two of St. Francisville's loveliest private homes, Wyoming Plantation and White's Cottage, will open their doors for the Speakers' Gala and Saturday Tea respectively. As in previous years, we will offer for sale the finest garden books and tools as well as an array of southern plants to satisfy every desire. In addition, Saturday's silent auction will be full of fantastic wares. On Saturday, September 24, in honor of National Museum Day, visitors are invited to come to Rosedown for a special tour entitled "Behind the Scenes at Rosedown: A Look at the Restoration and
Maintenance of a Historic House and Garden." Site Manager Patricia Aleshire will guide visitors on a tour of the attic of the Plantation Main House, as well as a tour of the production greenhouse used to
maintain and cultivate the plants that are displayed in Rosedown's Historic Gardens. Both of these areas are not generally open to the public, so this is a rare opportunity to see things normally viewed only
by site staff. The "Behind the Scenes" tour will begin on the front porch of the Main House at 10:30 for more information, call 225-635-3110.

Saturday – September 3^rd – Audubon State Historic Site – Oakley Plantation

The Plantation Blacksmith from noon until 4pm. See the plantation blacksmith turn out the ironwork necessary to keep the plantation going.

Civil War Life – Louisiana Confederates, 11am until 4pm. A costumed ranger leads a talk and demonstration on the uniforms, camp life, and history of the unit. The program includes a black powder demonstration.

The DIVA'S will sing and put on a fantastic show. Supper will be served from 5:30pm until 7:30pm. There will be lots of seating for the music. Plan to eat early and then move to the chairs for listening to the show (between 5:30pm-6:30pm).

Feliciana Hummingbird Celebration

July 29 - 30, 2011

The Feliciana Nature Society will hold their annual Feliciana Hummingbird Celebration on Friday, July 29, and Saturday, July 30, 2011 in St. Francisville, Louisiana. The Feliciana Hummingbird Celebration promotes the unique breeding habitat found in the St. Francisville area. The event will include a Friday evening speaker and the opportunity to observe hummingbirds up close as they are banded at two private homes in the St. Francisville area on Saturday. Hummingbird-friendly plants will also be available for sale.

The Feliciana Hummingbird Celebration will begin with a reception on Friday evening, July 29, at Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site, 12501Hwy. 10, St. Francisville. Beginning at 6 p.m., visitors can enjoy wine and cheese while strolling the gardens of Rosedown. At 6:45 p.m., Mr. Charles Fryling will speak on attracting Birds to Southern Gardens. Admission is Free

The festival will continue on Saturday, July 30. From 7:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m., hummingbird biologists Linda Beall and Nancy Newfield will capture and band birds at two beautiful gardens in the St. Francisville area. Visitors will have the opportunity to observe hummingbirds up close as they are weighed and measured. In addition, vendors will be at both homes with hummingbird-attractive plants available for sale. The gardens include those of the National WildBird Refuge at 15736 Tunica Trace (Hwy. 66) and Murrell Butler at 9485 Oak Hill Road. Admission is free.

Pie Contest at the Birdman

Monday July 4^th the Birdman will host a Watermelon eating and seed spitting contest along with their Pie Contest. Bring two pies one to sell and one to judge, entry should arrive at 12:30 and Judging will begin at 1:00pm. All proceeds will benefit Arts For All. For more info. Call Lynn at 635-3665.

Fireworks, Music and Food

Monday July 4^th the American Legion will have hot dogs, popcorn and drinks, we will have music and fireworks will be shot at dark. Come out to the Town Ball Park on Burnett Rd, behind the Sonic, come early and get a great spot. Tailgate with your friends.

Summer Heats Up in St. Francisville!!
Thought I would change up the format this week, let me know what you think.

Day The War Stopped

Up the steep hill they trudged, sweating in the sticky June heat, staggering under the weight of the coffin, the white flag of the truce flying before them in the hot summer sun. The guns of their federal gunboat, the USS Albatross, anchored in the Mississippi River off Bayou Sara, were silent behind them as a small party of officers struggled toward St. Francisville atop the hill.

The procession was not an impressive one, certainly not an unusual event in the midst of a bloody war, and it would no doubt have escaped all notice but for one fact-this was The Day The War Stopped, if only for a few mournful moments, and the lovely little rivertown of St. Francisville invites the public to join in commemorating the events 147 years ago.

The free commemorative events begin on Friday June 10, at 7pm., with graveside histories in the peaceful oak-shaded cemetery at Grace Church, where several of the participants in this unusual event rest in peace. The grave of Union gunboat commander Hart, whose burial is re-enacted on Saturday June 11, is marked by a monument “in loving tribute to the universality of Free Masonry” and nearby lies W.W. Leake, local Masonic leader and Confederate cavalry officer whose intervention permitted the interment of Hart in dignified rites attended by fellow Masons in both blue and gray.

On Saturday June 11, a lively parade travels along St. Francisville’s historic main street beginning at 11:00am followed by lunch at the Masonic Lodge from 11:30am to 12:30pm. Visitors will be pleasantly transported back in time during the afternoon at the Masonic Lodge by a concert of antebellum period music and graceful vintage dancing. A dramatic presentation recreates the moving moment when Hart’s young wife hears of his death, and this is followed by the recreation of his burial. Summer Horticultural Seminar Series

Saturday June 11, - 10am-noon Manager/Horticulturist Patricia Aleshire will conduct this popular summer garden program on “Heirloom Plants and Flowers”. During a slide/lecture session, Aleshire will discuss the historical background of numerous antique plantings available for modern gardens. Aleshire will also discuss various cultivation tips, techniques and care needed for these heirloom plantings to thrive in a southern garden. Memorial Day Weekend

I am back without my luggage in St. Francisville after going to Des Moines Iowa for the National Main Street conference. It is always nice to travel and for us to remember that sometimes it can be difficult and long and therefore when our guests arrive we want to make them feel welcome and show off our Southern Hospitality. Yesterday morning started off well until the power went out at the hotel so off I went to the airport and waited for a couple of hours shivering in the airport since the weather turned cool outside in the 50’s and it was finally time to leave, boarded the plane and ready to take off, we taxied and taxied and never lifted off and then turned around and headed back to the terminal, we had hit a bird (just my luck) we sat for awhile on the plane until cleared and ready to take off again, finally making it to Memphis, landing when I should have been taking off for Baton Rouge, after getting off the first plane (of course I was on the last row) thinking I would be spending time in Memphis, I walked off found the departure board and I was right next to the departure gate for my next flight and he actually held the plane for me, if I would have had time, I might have kissed him but had to hurry to board. Still waiting for my suitcase.

We have a full Memorial Day weekend and some great things coming up in June to kick off the Summer. We are still High N Dry in St. Francisville.

Audubon State Historic Site/Oakley Plantation will host the Colonial Militia Muster from 10:00am until 4:00pm. This program recreates the sights and sounds of an 1810 militia muster in the colony of Spanish West Florida. Included are black powder weapon demonstrations, costume and camp talks, along with an opportunity to discover life as it was here over 200 years ago. For more information call 225 635 3739.

The Criterium will take place downtown along Ferdinand and Royal streets from 1pm until 6pm. All of our downtown businesses will be open for shopping. The Family Fun Ride will start at 2pm leaving from Parker Park/St. Francisville Inn this will be a fun ride to Imahara’s Botanical Garden and back. After these two great events the Fugitive Poets will be playing music, jambalaya will be served around the Courthouse and the Masonic Lodge.

West Feliciana Parish Library is having a Story Time for pre-school age kids at 10am. the program will last about 30 minutes. This will be a weekly event every Thursday morning in February.

SATURDAY-FEBRUARY 5TH - WINTER CAMELLIA SEMINAR -
Trish Aleshire of Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site will present a seminar on Camellias at the Winter Camellia Seminar on Saturday February 5th at 10am in the conference room. The lecture will present a slide introduction and discussion of the historical background of numerous varieties of heirloom and contemporary camellias, as well as the care needed for these beautiful plants to thrive in a southern garden. SATURDAY-FEBRUARY 12TH - WINTER ENCAMPMENT - VALENTINE TEA AND 1811 SLAVE REBELLION BICENTENNIAL
The 7th Louisiana Civil War re-enactment group will begin their 2011 season at Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site. The group will present a Civil War era winter encampment on the grounds of the plantation and throughout the day will demonstrate typical camp activities, as well as presenting military drills such as marching, patrolling, and military maneuvers. The 7th Louisiana re-enactors are best known locally for their participation in the popular annual re-enactment of the historic Civil War Siege of Port Hudson. Rosedown will host its annual Christmas celebration from 9am until 5pm. They will demonstrate 19th century arts and crafts throughout the plantation complex. The Main House will be dressed in period decoration and hear stories of Christmas traditions at Rosedown that were passed down through the Turnbull and Bowman families.
