October Ends with Trick ot Treat

 
 
West Feliciana 4-H is almost finished taking orders for its 11th annual sweet potato fundraiser.

 We're selling 40-lb boxes of baking-size kiln-dried Louisiana sweet potatoes for $20 per box. They are to be delivered to "the old 4-H barn" in St. Francisville starting the week of November 7th. We'll accept orders through October 28th (check or money order) at the LSU Ag Center's West Feliciana office, 5924 Commerce St. (P.O. Box 1934), St. Francisville, LA 70775.Sales benefit the West Feliciana 4-H Foundation. Funds are used for incentives and awards, to help offset transportation costs for 4-H events, to purchase equipment, to fund a local scholarship, and to purchase educational materials for 4-H project activities.

Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site
The Cotton Experience: Variable Dates September through November, 2011, 10 am-4 pm.  This brief encounter allows guests to experience the job of cotton picking.  During these months visitors are able to walk amongst rows of cotton plants, pluck bolls of cotton from the plants and complete this task by removing the seeds from the bolls.  Once the cotton is picked and deseeded, visitors can drop the cotton in an authentic "cotton sack."  The Myrtles Halloween Extravaganza
The Myrtles Plantation 2011 Halloween Experience is scheduled for Friday, October 28-Monday, October 31, 2011. Our hours are 6 pm-10 pm Friday, Saturday & Monday and 6 pm-9pm Sunday. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased in our Gift Shop. The Carriage House Restaurant will be serving off the menu in the dining room and food and beverages in The Courtyard. We will also be offering a 6 pm Mystery Tour every Sunday during the month of October, reservations are strongly recommended by calling 225-635-6277.

ALL HALLOW'S EVE OF THE 1800s ON OCTOBER 28th

 

Visitors are invited to Audubon State Historic Site on October 28, to discover Halloween traditions of the 1800s during the program All Hallows Eve. Between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m., there will be an interactive program held throughout the grounds of Oakley illustrating Halloween practices of the 1800s in America. Included will be the origins of pumpkin carving and tales of mystery, apple bobbing, an old fashioned maze, plus games and treats for the whole family to enjoy. "Halloween customs have changed over the past 200 years," says John House, site manager. "However, some of the traditions of those long-ago times are reflected, even today."

Rosedown Funeral Re-enactment and Soul Stories: October 29, 2011, Funeral: 3 pm; Soul Stories: 4 pm.  The Rosedown Main House will be in mourning as Rosedown Interpretive Staff re-enacts the funeral service for a member of the historic Turnbull-Bowman family.  Throughout the day, the house will be decorated according to 19th century mourning customs and re-enactors will be dressed in 19th century-style mourning costumes.  The funeral service will be held at 3 pm inside the main house.  Following the funeral, costumed Rosedown Interpretive Staff will portray the spirits of various Turnbull-Bowman family members who have returned to the main house from their graves.  The "spirits" will talk about their lives and share reminiscences from their pasts.  

Friends of the Library Annual Book Sale

The Friends  of the West Feliciana Library will have its annual book sale at the St. Francisville Town Hall at11926 Ferdinand Street on Saturday, October 29 from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Darlene Reaves and Pat Heurtin are co-chairs of this event, which benefits both the people who attend this event as well as the West Feliciana Parish Library.

West Feliciana Parish Hospital will be hosting the annual health fair October 29, 9am till 2pm, as well. Various health screenings and vendors with health education will be available on site.

"Vino in the Ville – The St. Francisville Rotary and the St. Francisville Women's Service League will host a wine tasting event on Friday, November 11th at 7:00pm in the Wyoming Plantation Barn. Vino in the Ville is a team event. Each team is made of 2 or 3 people. To participate, each team pays $60 to register and brings 3 bottles of the same wine (either a Pinot Grigio or a Pinot Noir). Your bottles are entered into the tasting pool and winners are rewarded with wine prizes. So, grab a friend and three bottles of your favorite wine, and join us as we raise our glass and raise funds for local philanthropies.
