Music this Weekend!

Friday night at the Magnolia Café is our local favorite band, Delta Drifters.  Saturday night, June 28, in Parker Park we’ll have two more musical groups with a local flavor performing.  At 6:00 z-squared with Zak Lanius and Zak Douglas will open for The Diving Captain.  Remember to bring your lawn chairs or a blanket.  Then after the music in the park, Lee Barber (father of the drummer of The Diving Captain) will be performing his music at BirdMan.  This is a great weekend for a variety of musical styles!

 

Transitory Theatre News

Open auditions are being held for “What Alice Saw There,” an original play based on Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.  Show up Friday, June 27 and Saturday, June 28 at 6 pm at Bayou Sara Station next to Que Pasa.  For more information, call 245-4952 or visit www.sftheatre.net.

 

Guest Chef Wine Dinner

On Friday, June 27, Varnedoe’s at The Myrtles Plantation will feature 4 local “chefs” who will each provide a course, in addition to a couple of courses by the real chef, Scott Varnedoe.  The visiting “chefs” are Steve McKinney, Clay Couvillon, Anthony Verdicanno, and Clay Pinson.  Another local, Brian Gibbons, will provide the wine pairings from Avenue Wines.  This 6-course dinner with wine pairings for each course is $75 per person, all inclusive.  Reservations are required and space is limited.  For more information, call 635-2635 or visit www.varnedoes.com.

 

We’ll Miss You!

The Vintage Store will be closing its doors on Monday, June 30, for the last time.  We wish Libby Woodside well and thank her for offering such a unique shop for so long.  Good luck, Libby!

 

Closed for Vacation

Audubon Café will be closed from Tuesday, July 1 through Wednesday, July 9.  Lori Gore and her family will be on vacation during this time.

 

Fireworks!

Come join the fun and fireworks on Friday, July 4th at 6:30 pm at the St. Francisville Town Ball Park located behind the Sonic.  The American Legion will provide complimentary Hot Dogs and Soft Drinks, and the fireworks will begin at dark.  For more information call Laurie Walsh, St. Francisville Main Street at 635-3873.

 

A Land at War

Audubon State Historic Site offers this two-part program on Saturday, July 5.  The first part will be held from 10 am until noon, with the second part offered at 2 pm until 4 pm.  There will be period clothing talks as well as a black powder demonstration during the two different parts of this program.  For more information, call 635-3739.

 

Grave Rendering

On July 6 from 2 pm until 4:30 pm, at Locust Grove Cemetery, the interpretive staff will present a non-destructive way to take home mementoes of gravestone carvings from old graveyards.  The process, called grave rendering, will be taught to the visitor using the stones of the inhabitants of Locust Grove Cemetery.  For more information, call 635-3739.

 

The Ox Bow Restaurant Cookbook

Now back on store shelves, it’s the newly printed and updated cookbook from one of our finest restaurants in town.  Chef Philip Plaisance shares the most requested and some of the most popular served at the restaurant for his customers to prepare and serve at home.  Chef Phil also adds a few cooking tips and kitchen lore –a few things that no one ever told you!  If, like me, you are kitchen-challenged, you can always enjoy the great recipes cooked just for you at the Ox Bow Restaurant every day but Mondays.  For more information on the cookbook and the restaurant, give Phil or Ken a call at 635-6276.

Basket Weaving

Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site features demonstrations of the “lost arts” of the 19^th century every third Saturday of each month.  The June program is this Saturday beginning at 11 am and will feature basket weaving.  For more information, call 635-3110.

 

St. Francisville Transitory Theatre

New Play Festival, all original plays by local playwrights and members of the company, will be held this weekend at Old Market Hall on Royal Street on Friday and Saturday, June 20 and 21, beginning at 7:30 pm each night.  Friday night is Family Night.  These plays are family friendly, fun, and appropriate for all ages.   Saturday night will be an exploration into a more adult side of theatre with plays for mature audiences only.  Children under 18 will not be admitted without a parent since these plays are not for the easily offended or small minded.  “They are wonderful stories of the human experience.”  For more information, visit www.sftheatre.net or call 245-4952.

 

 Mad Hatter’s Tea Party

The St. Francisville Transitory Theatre will host a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party on Saturday, June 21^st at Jackson Hall at 2 pm.  Tickets are $25; call 245-4952 to reserve your spot.

 

Vibes in the Ville

Parker Park in downtown St. Francisville sets the stage for a concert of music under the stars.  Bring you lawn chair or a picnic blanket and enjoy the perky alt-pop Austin outfit, The Diving Captain.  The band starts playing at 6 pm for this free concert.

The Day the War Stopped

This weekend brings this annual event which commemorates a day in history which, for too brief a moment, the fighting of the Civil War stopped and human dignity took center stage.  Beginning on Friday evening at 7 pm, graveside histories and an historical presentation will be held at Grace Episcopal Church, followed at 8 pm with an open house at the Masonic Lodge.  A parade down Ferdinand Street gets things started on Saturday, June 14 at 10:30 am, ending at the Masonic Lodge where lunch will be served from 11 am until 12:30 pm.  There will also be a vintage musical concert from 11:30 until 12:30 at Jackson Hall, then vintage dancers from 12:30 to 1:30 pm.  The highlight of the weekend’s events then begin – the drama and re-enactment of the burial for Union Cmdr. Audubon State Historic Site

Held at the request of the town of St. Francisville in association with their “Day the War Stopped” program, Audubon State Historic presents Civil War on the Home Front.  This program, scheduled for Saturday, June 14 from 10 am to 4 pm, will feature sights and scenes of Oakley Plantation during the Civil War.  Includes costume talks, demonstrations on period food, civil war medicines, black powder weapons and more.  For more information call locally 635-3739

Locust Grove

Also continuing with the Civil War theme, there will be a talk on Sarah Knox Taylor Davis on Sunday, June 15, from 1 – 3 pm at Locust Grove Cemetery State Historic Site.  Ongoing will be gravestone rendering classes.

Audubon Antiques is having an antique auction this Saturday, June 7.

 

Angola Art Symposium

The Louisiana State Penitentiary Museum Board hosts Art Symposium at the Prison on Saturday, June 7.  Gates open at 9 am, registration is free and lunch is available for $5.  The symposium will feature both inmate art and artwork collected from people most affected by crime.  The artwork will be showcased at various historic locations on the prison grounds including the Red Hat Cellblock, which is listed on the National Register of Historic places.  For more information call 655-2592 or visit www.angolamuseum.org.

 

Day the War Stopped

This is an historical re-enactment of a very moving event during the Civil War.  Beginning on Friday, June 13 and continuing through Sunday, June 15, events include graveside histories, an open house at the Masonic Lodge, a parade on Saturday, vintage musical concert, vintage dance, and the drama and re-enactment.  Much more is planned so visit www.daythewarstopped.net for more information.
